Hospital Employees Should Receive Protection

Nurses, we continue to fight for you.

First responders, like firefighters and police officers, who are required to protect the public, are presumed to be injured on the job when they get cancer or an infectious disease.

Hospital employees, the first responders of our healthcare system who are 80 percent female, do not receive these same protections.

Law Office of Michelle D. Brodie has been a long time supporter of extending presumptions of injuries to nurses and other hospital employees who work in potentially dangerous situations with various hazardous conditions.

Ensuring they have adequate protections for job-related injuries should be guaranteed, but the battle rages on.

Senate Bill 567 sought to remedy this absurd discrepancy by creating presumptions for work-related injuries including infectious diseases, cancer, musculoskeletal injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, and respiratory diseases.

Nurses are regarded by Americans to be the most trustworthy professionals. But can they put their trust in us?

Sadly, SB 567 died in committee late last month, but the war is not over. We must continue the fight to enact proper protections so nurses can finally put their trust in our workers’ compensation system.
